Nora e Pula
Nora is the most popular seaside resort for the inhabitants of Poggio dei Pini as it’s only 19km away and it is splendid. The beach is protected from the dominant winds and therefore the ideal choice when the strong Mistral wind blows, (unless you are a Surfer). Besides the beach, Nora is the most important archaeological Punic-Roman site in Sardinia, described also in the pages of our website.
An interesting place to visit near Nora is Pula, 3 km away. Besides the archaeological-ethnographical museum, it is pleasant place to spend the Summe r evenings, as it organizes a lively programme of cultural and musical events.

The Sulcis Coast
The SS 195 road towards Pula and St. Margherita crosses a level strip between the mountains of Eastern Sulcis area and the sea. Immediately after the turnoff for Chia , the countryside has more movement: this road has been considered one of the ten most beautiful in Italy. Crossing the swamplands of Chia, behind a curve, you will be astounded by the breathtaking beauty of the beach of Tuarredda .The next stop, another beach to give you a thrill: Porto Pino . Be careful however, don’t miss visiting the snow-white sand dunes on the Southern side; you’ll never forget them.
Let’s leave the sea and direct our steps a few chilometres inland. In this zone there are several localities worth visiting: the grottos of Is Zuddas , situated between Teulada and Santadi, and the Domus de Janas of Mt.Essu , near Nuxis. On the road back, you’ll pass by the ruined castle of Acquafredda. If you climb to the top, you will enjoy the view of the whole valley of the CixerriRiver.

The south-western coast (iglesiente)
Quickly cross the flat land of Macchiareddu and the valley of Cixerri, passing near the castle of Acquafredda and head towards Iglesias. From here we begin a circular tour which starts out mountainous and concludes, coastal. Along the winding road that brings you to the town of Fluminimaggiore, there are two localities to visit: the grottos of Su Mannau and the Temple of Antas . Add a visit to the seaside resort of Portixeddu . From here, we take the panoramic coastal road to Buggerru. Iglesias is the mining zone par excellence of Sardinia. In this itinerary we have the possibility of visiting 4 mining sites: the Henry Gallery at Buggerru, Porto Flavia at Masua, the mine (with carsic grotto) at St. Barbara near Carbonia and the Mine of St. Giovanni near Domusnovas: yours, the choice. Meanwhile, enjoy the breathtaking panorama of the high coastline that takes you from Buggerru towards Masua, where you will be astounded by the spectacle of the rock named “Sugar Loaf” – the cherry on the cake! However, not before you have visited the beach of our dreams: Cala Domestica . This is where we advise you to stop. After the big beach of Funtanamare , one returns towards Igesias and from there, a fast run home along the 4-laned highway of the SS 130.

The coast of Villasimius
Villasimius is 80kms from Poggio dei Pini. You take the SS 195 for Cagliari and cross the city, heading for the beach of Poetto . From here the provincial road begins, taking you to Villasimius. After about 20kms of densely populated coastline, the road rises and then follows one bay after the other. Some are occupied by tourist villages like Geremeas , Torre delle Stelle and Solanas . Others like the splendid Mari Pintau , are natural marvels still uncontaminated. The bay of Villasimius opens behind a curve. The township, of little architectonical interest, lies 2km from the sea. A magnificent sea, today protected as a Marine Park which, prohibiting fishing, permits snorkelling enthusiasts to gaze at the marine fauna which elsewhere, has almost disappeared. Villasimius is surrounded by beautiful beaches: il Giunco , the Spiaggia del Riso, Campus , Simius and Punta Molenti .

Island of St. Peter
St. Peter is an island within an island and gives us without doubt, the opportunity of a pleasant excursion. One arrives on the island by taking a ferry (40 min. crossing) that leaves from Calasetta or Portovesme . The latter is closer for us, and therefore can be reached via the SS 130 or by the mountain road of Siliqua. Ferries leave every hour, but it is better not to take the car. The only town centre is Carloforte (circa 5,000 inhabitants), characterised by Genovese origin and consequentially, also their dialect and the architectonical style of the township. Regarding food however, Carloforte is noted for its Tunisian Couscous, due to the fact that the Genovese who colonised the island, came from a previous Tunisian settlement. There are two ways to visit the island: On arrival in the port of Carloforte, you can take a tour of the island by boat, or hire a motor-scooter and do it by land. San Pietro is above all, an island of rocks and cliffs. The most interesting points to see are Cala Fico , Cala Mezzaluna , Le Colonne , the Grotta delle Oche and the beach of la Bobba .

The Green Coast
The coastline that goes from Capo Mannu to Capo Pecora, is name the GreenCoast. It has no populated areas and only in later years have there been any tourist installations (Torre dei Corsari, Marina di Arbus). Fortunately, the greater part of the coast has been preserved and the distance from the larger cities, even in mid-August, enables it to avoid crowds. We arrive at the Green Coast by travelling the flatland of the Campidano and crossing the mountain of Linas, passing through Arbus. The woods are wonderful and warrant excursions, but we’re going directly to our destination on the coast, though not before stopping to admire the abandoned buildings of the mining town of Ingurtosu . Descending towards Piscinas is thrilling and what awaits you, even moreso. A little piece of desert in European territory: the dunes of Piscinas don’t limit themselves to bordering the beachfront, as in other localities of the island, but they extend further inland for some chilometres. There are dunes to the North at Pistis and marvellous ones further South at Scivu .The whole territory is to be explored. On our return, if we wish we can continue along the coast, following the route described before (Buggerru), or else, return the same way we came.
