Itinerary n° 2 - Rural churches - 2 hrs. ––
In the territory of Poggio dei Pini there are two very ancient churches to be found in interesting surroundings: St.Barbara and St.Girolamo . They can be reached by car or on foot. Read the history of the church of St.Barbara. From the villa , one takes the path of the “old Genovese road” along which in past times, ran a small mining railway. After 1 km. you cross the asphalt road that connects Poggio dei Pini to Capoterra, near the research station Hydrocontrol , and continue along the path on the opposite side of the road. 900 mts further on, one crosses a little bridge over Rio San
Girolamo and goes uphill for 300mts towards the tiny village of the same name, where you find the little church. This path continues rising for another 200 mts, towards a fire-break, from which to admire the marvellous view. For another 1.4 km, follow the path towards St.Barbara. Passing the ruined dwellings, you arrive at the spring named “Sa scabizzada” (read history). All told, we have travelled 4 kms in about 1 hr.15mins. The downhill trip will be faster and you will shorten the walk by using the village’s asphalted road (3.2 km – 40mins.)

Itinerary n° 3 - Mt. Pauli Ara - 1 hr. 20 mins. ––
This hike also starts from the villa and mixes stretches of road (also asphalted), wide paths, and also steep paths not well-known. It takes in the zone of the Shopping Centre at the foot of the mountain range that encloses Poggio dei Pini. Leaving the last houses of the village, one goes uphill towards the Astronomical Observatory of Punta Sa Menta on a rather steep climb which isn’t well marked. Special attention must be given to the point with the warning sign on the map : one must turn left and not follow straight on, though the path is not clearly visible. At the end of the uphill rise, you arrive at one of the open spaces leading to the Observatory. From here there is a wide panorama of both Poggio dei Pini and the coastline of Frutti d’Oro, as far as Cagliari. Then follows another brief rise towards the Fire Alarm Lookout which dominates the whole territory (panorama). A dirt road on the right, takes you to a building (water tank). Here, it seems as though the path ends, but passing a low stone-wall , one can descend towards the pine woods of the Pauliara section. The way is not always clear, but following the metal pipeline will help. Shortly after, you arrive at a wonderful path which winds below the Pauliara woods. Continuing downhill, one reaches the houses. At this point it is easy to direct your steps to the lake and return to the villa.

Itinerary n° 4 - The paths of Masoni Ollastu - from 1 to 3 hrs. – – –
South of Poggio dei Pini and the valley of Rio San Girolamo, is the splendid valley of Riu Masoni Ollastu, lacking in anthropical presence. Leave the car in the township (flag on the map) and walk up to the hill that dominates the valley of Masoni Ollastu with a small lake. Starting from the stream, there are various paths winding upwards towards the pass called “S’Ena e sa Craba” (the Goats’ Pass). We have chosen 3 paths for you: the short one (rose), the medium (violet) and the long one (yellow), for you the choice (see map). The paths are all well-signed but be careful of those with a warning sign along the green path. That part of the path that descends towards the stream Masoni Ollastu is made difficult by the chasms carved by the rain. Along the way, enjoy the Nature, rich in all the fragrances of the Mediterranean vegetation.Distances: Red Path – 3,8 km.:1hr 10mins.Red + Green – 8,2 km: 2hrs.20mins).Red+Blue Path – 8,8 km: 2hrs.40mins.

Itinerary n° 5 - Highlands of Rio S. Girolamo - 1 hr. 15 min. ––
One can start this path by leaving the car at the point indicated on the map. However, one can also reach it on foot, from the villa (see Path N° 2). The route is a circle to be taken in a clockwise direction. Choose this second solution if you wish to do the uphill walk at the end. In fact, this path starts near the church of San Girolamo and rises immediately on the Northern side of Mount St.Barbara, consenting a wonderful view of the highland valley of Rio San Girolamo. Here, it makes a wide curve, creating an amphitheatre in the mountains of Arcu de Is Sennoras. The path descends then, towards the stream which will accompany you in the Winter and Spring, with its bubbling flow. The return trip is in the valley below. Where the stream turns East, you’ll find the ruins of what was once a mining building that was also the railway station for the train that ran the Genovese Road, down to the sea (near Torre degli Ulivi).

Itinerary n° 6 - The ascent to Mount St. Barbara - 2 hrs. ––
This is the most difficult of the itineraries suggested in these pages. Not only because it is sloping all the way but also because in the final part, you proceed on rocky terrain . Instead, at the beginning there is the aid of a wide fire-break to help the climb. There are various ways we can take to arrive. For example, you can leave the car at the point indicated on the map. At the top there is a vast panorama from Poggio dei Pini down to the sea, and on the other side, the valley of Rio San Girolamo with Mount Conchioru.
